Far Arden

Far Arden

Meet Army Shanks, crusty old sea dog and legendary brawler of the high Arctic seas! He's got just one mission: to find the mythical island paradise known as Far Arden, which lies hidden, so they say, in the wintry oceans of the far North. But there's more than just water standing between Shanks and his goal: he'll have to contend with circus performers, adorable orphans, heinous villains, bitter ex-lovers, well-meaning undergraduates, and the full might of the Royan Canadian Arctic Navy! Not to mention he's not so sure how to get to Far Arden in the first place! Far Arden is an epic journey through a world not quite our own, written and drawn with strokes bold and swift. Thrilling, eccentric, lusty, genuinely moving, and often hilarious, this may be the best adventure comic you'll read all year.

Sometime Stories

Sometime Stories

The full story of the seminal underground Sometime Stories can be found on McCarthy's website. In brief, he describes it thus:"Sometime Stories by myself and Brett was drawn in 1976, and released in 1977. Needless to say the publisher ripped us off and we never got paid, and some ulcerous swine ran off with the artwork for number 2...It was a shame it never made it past the first issue...We felt we were going in a totally new direction. Something that was truly British in flavour, but different in its attitude. There were some ridiculous concepts in Sometime Stories. I still particularly like The Red Slug, a very Rog 2000 inspired piece by Brett, and also the main villain of the comic, the deranged Crinkum Crankum who was in fact 'Reason For Man's Existence's Brother'. I liked the Gruff as well, with Mr Skreet-nite and The Royal Blank, who were all basic 'Hat' villains along the lines of Ditko's Crimemaster and The Shadow. I'm still very fond of Brett's creation Felix Adler, which is still in a way my favourite character of his. Finn Mac Cool was based on my continuing interest in most things Irish."Much of the inspired weirdness of both men's later work is already very much apparent in Sometime Stories, infused with heavy doses of '60s pop surrealism, Irish folklore and then-current punk rock attitude.

Dominion (2002)

Dominion (2002)

I remember the first time I saw one. It must have been a few of days after the Peliad meteor shower. He didn't have a costume. He didn't have a cape-he just appeared in the sky as a commercial airliner was going down. The woman next to me yelled, "Look! Up in the sky!" And that's when he crushed the plane like a beer can. We had no idea how bad things were going to get. These days, I just pray for mercy.

A Lapse In Judgment

A Lapse In Judgment

Any resemblance to persons living or dead or actual events would be strangely coincidental... In a town in the east of France, Sylvestre Ruppert-Levansky, a president of the circuit court, begins his last trial, in the same place his career began. Everything here reminds him of Rachel, his first love, and most of all, Mathilde, a manipulative, diabolic serial killer. The old magistrate has a spotless reputation. He is considered tolerant and fair. But then a police officer from his past asks to see him. Perhaps the legend of Sylvestre, the eminent judge, isn't so cut and dry...
